Timeline of Research and Evidence on
Homophobia and Transphobia in sport
50 years of research has consistently found homophobic behaviours are common in male sport, females (of all sexualities) are stigmatized as lesbians for playing traditionally male sports, and LGBTQ people feel excluded and unwelcome.
Researchers have studied the problems extensively, but little has changed. Resistance from sport leaders is a factor (see the sport action timeline), but researchers have also focused almost entirely on the problems, with little attention to finding solutions which can be implemented in sport settings.
The problems are clear. We now need evidence-based solutions and action.
